The record of the longest able to stay awake was taken by Gardner when he was 17 years old.  He could stay awake for 11 days and 24 minutes or 264.4 hours in 1964. Gardner was a high school student in San Diego, California. Due to his wonderful action, he could break the previous record of Tom Rounds of Honolulu. Rounds was a disk jockey that could stay awake for 260 hours and 17 minutes.

His action of not sleeping more than 11 days made the sleep research community interested and amazed. When Gardner wanted to record his action, Dr. William C. Dement was there. He was a Stanford sleep researcher. Lt. Cmdr. John J. Ross was the one in charge of monitoring the health of Gardner. His two classmates, Bruce McAllister and Joe Marciano Jr kept the log. Both were from Point Loam High School.

The health of Gardner was monitored by Lt. Cmdr. John J. Ross.  He stated that Gardner experienced serious behavioral and cognitive changes. The effects include paranoia, short term memory, problem concentration and hallucinations.

On the eleventh day, Gardner has a problem with concentration. He was asked to count the number starting with 100; he could only do it until 65.  He forgot what he was doing so he stopped counting the number.

Longest Able To Stay Awake: After the sleep deprivation

After breaking the record of the longest able to stay awake, Gardner began to sleep for 14 hours and 40 minutes. He woke up at 8:40 pm. Then he stayed conscious until 7:30 pm. Then he slept again for 10 hours and 30 minutes.
